Maryam Mirzakhani was an Iranian mathematician and a professor of mathematics at Stanford University.

She was born on May 12, 1977, in Tehran, Iran and passed away on July 14, 2017, in Palo Alto, California, U.S.

She was the first woman and the first Iranian to be awarded a Fields Medal in 2014. Her research topics included Teichmüller theory, hyperbolic geometry, ergodic theory, and symplectic geometry. She made monumental contributions to the study of the dynamics and geometry of mathematical objects called Riemann surfaces
